Remix JAM sessions Commandments Teacher Guide

Rules, rules, rules!

What could be more fun than studying rules, right? Well, we’ve made this fun. We learn about the commandments and then we learn how Jesus repackaged them in a quick way to cover them all by teaching us to Love God and Love People. We’ll be looking at two commandments each week.

Week 1

Jesus Session: God comes first. No gods before him, no idols in place of him.

TIP: Teamwork makes the dream work! Set a precedent by having older kids help the younger ones. This gives help to the littles - freeing your busy hands - and gives a sense of responsibility to the older ones. It also keeps the older ones from getting bored if they finish the craft too quickly. if you have a fairly consistent group of kids, group them in sets of 2-3 for the entirety of the six weeks.

Art Session: We make a first place ribbon signifying that we need to keep God in first place in our lives.

Music Session: We introduce “Ten In One” Be sure to learn the new song!

Week 2

Jesus Session: Don’t use God’s name in vain and respect the Sabbath.

Art Session: This stained glass church is so pretty.

Music Session: Separating melody and lyrics can be helpful in the beginning, but ultimately it’s the combination that helps them remember.

Week 3

Jesus session: Honor our parents and don’t kill. Hopefully none of your kiddos are mass murderers at this point! So, we concentrate on honoring parents. Not all parents are worthy of respect and a place of authority so be sensitive as we discuss obedience. Obeying out of fear or obligation is not what God wants. Here is a great article on what this means.

Art Session: We make three keys of obedience: I will obey right away, all the way, in a joyful way. remember, all the templates and instructions are available through the link in week one.

Music Session: Think about memorization.

Week 4

Jesus Session: Don’t take what’s not yours. This covers stealing and adultery. Consider the ages in your class before mentioning adultery but an acceptable explanation for all ages is that adultery is not staying faithful in your marriage.

Art Session: If you don’t have pipe cleaners, you can just have them draw a body.

Music: Show students how they will be standing on stage. The sooner they understand this, the more fluid it will be.

Week 5

Jesus Session: Don’t lie or covet. We mostly focus on the lying.

Art Session: make paper bag puppets that always tell the truth.

Music Session: Let parents know what to expect next week. Here’s a template for a note to send home.

Week 6

Jesus Session: My favorite part. We can cover all the commandments with these. Love God. Love people.

TIP: If you have spare time, you can show this video about Love.

Art Session: We make pouches that can hold all of their crafts.

Music: Smile!

TIP: When your class has learned a song but you're not scheduled to sing it in church, do your own Mini concert for family. Have parents stay at pickup for the kiddos to sing their song.
