Let’s listen to the prophets.
The prophets were men and women in the Bible who shared God’s message, usually warnings, about things to come. After the coming of the Holy Spirit, there was less need for prophets. We need to listen to the Spirit but also listen to people God puts into our lives to challenge and correct us (like parents and Sunday school teachers).
Week 1
Jesus Session: Isaiah was a prophet. He is one who prophesied with great detail the birth of Jesus. It’s fun to look back and see how it came true.
TIP: There are 3 crafts of different levels for each lesson. Besides the craft here, there are coloring sheets and coloring sheets with an added element. Check the craft instructions download for all directions.
Art Session: The art project each week of this unit is the same format. Felt finger puppets are cute and usable. Yes, it takes a lot to cut the pieces all out. Check with parents or small groups to see if they can help ahead of time.
TIP: If you don't have access to felt, use cardstock instead.
Music Session: Introduce Listen.
Week 2
Jesus Session: Jeremiah told the people to stop going to the temple if they weren’t going to do what God asked the rest of the week. Oof.
Art Session: See week 1.
Music Session: Learning the melody and the lyrics separately can be a great help, but ultimately memorization will come when they go together.
Week 3
Jesus Session: Deborah is one of the only female prophets mentioned. She essentially ruled the nation. Girls can do great things!
Art Session: See week 1.
Music Session: Work on memorization.
Week 4
Jesus Session: Kids like the story of Daniel because there are lions in it. It’s okay for stories to be both true and age appropriate. Littles don’t need all the details. What they do need to understand is that God loves them. God wants them to obey him. God is capable of rescuing them from danger.
TIP: Don't say God always keep them safe. He doesn't. Some littles learn that God always rescues them and then when something tragic happens, they don't know what to believe. Is God not true? Or did I do something to make him forget about me? No. God is always with us. Sometimes he walks with us around danger, sometimes through danger, and sometimes into danger. He's always beside us but it doesn't mean bad things can't happen.
Art Session: See week 1.
Music Session: Allow the kids to practice standing like they would on stage. Get them used to the idea of singing in front of other people.
Week 5
Jesus Session: I’ve always been fascinated by this story with Elijah. No amount of peer pressure could convince him that God was not in control.
Art Session: See week 1.
Music Session: Keep parents informed with this reminder.
Week 6
Jesus Session: Jonah messed up. A lot. But God gives second chances and so should we.
Art Session: See week 1.
Music Session: Have fun singing!
