Little JAM Sessions: Okay Chat

How do we have conversations with God??

We’ve taught the littles that God loves them and wants to be their friend. We communicate with our friends, but how do we communicate with God? We’ll look at six ways.

TIP: There are 3 crafts of different levels for each lesson. Besides the craft here, there are coloring sheets and coloring sheets with an added element. Check the craft instructions download for all directions.

Week 1

Jesus Session: The first type of communication is prayer. Prayer is simply talking to God. We talk about Hannah praying for a baby and God hearing her prayer.

TIP: Asking the kids questions at the beginning of class let's them get out the words building up in them. It also allows you the opportunity to later ask them to be quiet and remind them they already had their turn to speak.

Art Session: This bookmark is super easy. Just remember to put the tape sticky side up!

TIP: Remember to get small groups or the choir or worship team to help with donating items for crafts or helping cut out things. Lots of people have left over tissue paper!

Music Session: We introduce “Call To Me” Be sure to learn the new song!

Week 2

Jesus Session: We also talk to God through our worship. Yes, worship is many-faceted, but we’ll concentrate on singing to God. We talk about Miriam, Moses’ sister, who led the singing and dancing after the crossing of the Red Sea.

Art Session: Paper plate tambourine is a fun craft. It’s great with the bells, but don’t worry if you don’t have any. It’s still cute without them.

Music Session: Separating melody and lyrics can be helpful in the beginning, but ultimately, it’s the combination that helps them remember. This is a great week to remind them that we sing to worship God.

Week 3

Jesus session: Actions speak louder than words! This week we talk about how our actions communicate with God. The widow giving her meager offering is a great example.

Art Session: This box is fun to make but a little tricky. Practice it once before you show them.

Music Session: Think about memorization.

Week 4

Jesus Session: The most obvious way God speaks to us is through the Bible. Make certain littles know it’s more than a story book, but God’s words to us.

Art Session: I love these lanterns. Printing is easiest, but if you’re low on ink, cut them out of black construction paper.

Music: Show students how they will be standing on stage. The sooner they understand this, the more fluid it will be.

Week 5

Jesus Session: God speaks through the Holy Spirit. This is simply an introduction as it’s a complex topic.

Art Session: There are lots of pinwheel instructions online. I like this one because it doesn’t use pins.

Music Session: Let parents know what to expect next week. Here’s a template for a note to send home.

Week 6

Jesus Session: God speaks to us through other people. As my son is from Ethiopia, this story holds a special place in my heart.

Art Session: I have several baskets from Ethiopia and they’re quite beautiful. This craft is great training for threading and lacing and using those fine motor skills. Tape the ends of the yarn so they go through the holes easier.

Music: Smile!

TIP: When your class has learned a song but you're not scheduled to sing it in church, do your own Mini concert for family. Have parents stay at pickup for the kiddos to sing their song.
