KidMin Choir is such a fantastic tool for discipleship. Memorizing a song that goes along with Biblical principles is great — if the littles are understanding what it’s all about! Imagine singing the ABCs and never learning what a letter is!! You can read my whole article Now I Know My ABCs, but let me reiterate, the Jesus Session is a crucial part of Little JAM Sessions.
Here is an overview of our Okay, Chat unit. You can see there is a theme verse for the unit. The theme is conversations with God. We go over three ways to talk to God and three ways he talks to us.
We look at people in the Bible who used these methods.
Our memory verse is short and reflected in the choir song.
Here is week one of Okay, Chat. Notice the top section. This is the Jesus section. It consists of :
- Welcome and opening question
- Bible verse
- Short lesson
- Prayer
Each lesson contains these components.
Why have a Jesus Session in your choir?
It’s really important for the choir to understand what they’re singing. How much more important is this in the church?? How often do we have kids sing songs with words and phrases they don’t understand? I’m not saying we should dumb-down the music, I’m saying we need to teach the littles what they’re singing about. Give them context. Show them where in the Bible the truth of the song is found. *Hint if you can’t find this, you shouldn’t be singing it.
The kids in choir should know three specific things about every song they sing.
- What scripture inspired the song? Is it Biblical or just feel good?
- What do the lyrics mean? Do they understand all the terminology used in the song?
- How does this song relate to their life?
After researching and discovering that no curriculum existed to help leaders teach these crucial aspects, I created my own. Little JAM Sessions curriculum is Biblical and fun. Each six-week units includes a choir song and Bible lessons, crafts, and take-home activities so that each child -whether an aural, kinesthetic, or visual learner – will understand the Good News of Jesus presented in their song.
